Shooting stars

Inspired by Pattern Magic, this design uses the “Lumps and Bumps” technique to form growing cubic shapes that evoke shooting stars. The garment explores contrast between structure and fluidity, technology and nature.

For this garment, I was inspired by the book Pattern Magic and explored the technique “Lumps and Bumps (Dekoboko)”. This method evolved from the idea of incorporating uneven surface decoration into a garment. As stated in the book, “Attaching cubes onto a base is in itself interesting, but when the cubes are connected with design lines, the undulating lines come alive.”

In my design, the cubes gradually increase in size toward the hem of the dress, creating a sense of movement. The curly seams form the cube structures, which stand out in shiny pink vinyl, evoking the image of shooting stars.

I was drawn to the idea of contrast—light and dark, heavy and light—and wanted to express this duality within fashion. By placing a somewhat robotic-looking garment in a natural, still environment, I aimed to highlight the coexistence of artificial and organic elements in modern life.
